Research, Policy and Publications

Research

At Beyond the Streets we produce evidence-based resources and reports grounded in research, lived experience and practitioner insight.

Our research deepens understanding of the issues facing women selling and/or exchanging sex to help shape trauma-informed policy and practice. Drawing on evidence from across our own support services and insights from our wider Affiliate Network, we identify and analyse emerging themes and trends affecting women selling and/or exchanging sex. This helps ensure that the real-time experiences of women directly influence service design and policy development at a local, regional and national level.

We also work collaboratively with academics and other organisations to ensure the voices and experiences of those with lived experience of sexual exploitation, survival sex and the wider sex industry are meaningfully centred within wider research studies.

All of our research is underpinned by a commitment to trauma-informed and ethical practice.

Policy Work

Our policy and influencing work is grounded in lived experience, practitioner insights and evidence. We use these insights to shape policy, influence decision-making and drive systemic change by responding to consultations and calls for evidence and by engaging with key decision-makers across Government, local authorities and other statutory agencies and partners. Our research plays an important role in strengthening this work and ensuring our policy development is rooted in evidence.

At Beyond the Streets, we understand that women’s routes into and involvement in selling sex are shaped by structural inequality, societal norms and barriers to accessing support, which can all influence women’s experiences and opportunities. We believe change requires a whole-system approach and cross-sector collaboration, which is why collaboration and partnership are central to our policy and influencing work.
