Unifying to End Sexual Exploitation
This International Day of Human Rights marks the culmination of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. At Beyond the Streets, we are reminded of the ongoing fight to end the exploitation of women and girls, particularly through sexual exploitation and survival sex.
For over two decades, Beyond the Streets has worked tirelessly to challenge the systems and attitudes that perpetuate exploitation, while advocating for the rights, dignity, and safety of women. As CEO, I am humbled daily by the strength and resilience of the women we work alongside and the commitment of our sector to bring about lasting change.
Shining a Light on Survival Sex
During this period of activism, our focus is on raising awareness of survival sex – a term used to describe the exchange of sex for essential resources like food and shelter. Too often, the circumstances that drive women to survival sex are overlooked, dismissed, or misunderstood.
Our work centres on addressing the root causes – poverty, homelessness, trauma, and systemic inequities – and ensuring women can access the support they need to rebuild their lives. Ending sexual exploitation is not just about challenging individual actions but dismantling the broader systems that make exploitation possible.
We know that we cannot do this alone. That’s why we work in partnership with statutory and voluntary agencies to challenge systems, educate communities, and amplify the voices of women. It’s why we continue to advocate for resources that meet women where they are and help them move towards a future free from exploitation.
Standing with Women
At Beyond the Streets, we believe every woman deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported, no matter her circumstances. This belief drives everything we do, from direct services like our Door of Hope project to the partnerships we forge with local authorities, faith groups, and other organisations.
I’ve been inspired by the commitment of our supporters, who have stood with us in this fight through sustained generosity and community engagement. It is this collective action—across sectors, faiths, and communities—that makes change possible.
Inspiration and Hope
This 16 Days of Activism, I am inspired by the women we support – women who show incredible strength and determination in the face of unimaginable challenges. They are the reason we fight.
I’m also inspired by our supporters, partners, and team members who stand with us every day. Together, we are building a world where no woman has to endure exploitation to survive – a world where equity, dignity, and justice prevail.
As we approach Human Rights Day on December 10th, let’s reaffirm our collective commitment to unity, raising our voices, and taking action to end sexual exploitation.
With gratitude and hope,
Mari Edwards
