Positively NO

There comes a certain weariness at this time of year. It’s dark in the daytime, term runs longer, the appeal of tuning out and staying in is never stronger. In this context, there are two ways to approach 25th November, the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: nestle down and ignore it completely, or respond to it as to a timely global wake up call. It’s your choice.

And what a luxury that choice is. Millions of women around the world have no such freedom. Denied education, denied the right to determine their own destinies, their bodies, time and options for the future become enslaved by others who gain from their silence and submission. It’s no way to live, but women all over the world live and die this way. Here in the UK, women in the sex industry routinely deny their own desires in order to gratify the desires of others. One could say it takes bottle to do that, but really what it takes is years of maltreatment, years of exploitation, years of saying “yes” when what you really want to say is “No.” It’s a conditioned powerlessness that derives from having your boundaries utterly eroded.

One of the difficulties is that with limited avenues out, it’s very hard to say no and make change on your own. That’s where NOvember comes in. This November we have the opportunity to stand alongside exploited women and use the power of our own ‘No’ on behalf of those whose wishes routinely go ignored, unheard, unvoiced. Say No to coffee or chocolate or some other casual comfort and donate the money saved. Get friends to sponsor you, or better still, participate.

Or do none of the above, and fine yourself for not saying No. It’s your choice. Use it well.
